2009 Summer Fete – Penny Ponzi
In 2009 the V&A wanted their annual village fete to be in tune with recessionary times and adopt an optimistic theme - digging for victory. Capturing the banking zeitgeist, we created a stall which encouraged people to invest in a Penny Ponzi scheme. More than 500 people rolled up to invest a maximum of a £1 over the weekend. Obviously we needed to attract investors to keep paying out, so we promised a good return (20% every hour), but only for those who were willing to wait.
Needless to say, the stall went bust a few times over the weekend leaving victims to nurse ‘Penny Ponzi Victim’ badges while winners received ones with the slogan ‘Free Bernie Madoff’ not to mention a fast buck.
